Part I: Cancer: The Great American Disease
Thea Elijah, MAc
Every illness has a transformation of virtue, and cancer is no exception. Cancer is a Water/Wood illness that is characterized by growth that has gone awry and refuses to die even at the expense of the body's own health and integrity. Its virtue is the capacity for healthy mutation the ability to grow beyond our former self, and the willingness to die' in order to survive, rather than sacrifice holism. The American mind-set is to "kill the enemy," no matter what the impact on the host organism.
An ecological approach to healing does not harm the body or the environment. An ecological response to illness is the essence of treatment in Chinese medicine. America as a whole faces significant medical, political and ecological issues that parallel the prevalence of cancer. This workshop address the real issues behind our need to win every battle, and why the "war against cancer" is an opportunity to see our collective pathology, and to choose an alternate approach to disease that does not treat the illness as an enemy, but as a teacher.
